Merel Takken is the artist behind Interiorisla. She was born in the Netherlands and now lives in sunny Palma de Mallorca. Merel is an interior designer with a passion for art. She is inspired by the beautiful nature of the island where she lives. Her work is mainly based on the flora and fauna and the natural forms found in everyday life on the Mallorcan island.

Her work is deeply rooted in the abstract, where the interplay of geometric shapes and organic patterns evokes a sense of harmony. She particularly enjoys incorporating botanical elements into her designs, drawing inspiration from the delicate structures of leaves, flowers and natural textures.

References

Merel draws inspiration from a mix of modern and classical artists. From Picasso, Matisse and Soulages to the contemporary aesthetics of Scandinavian interior design. Two female artists whose work in oils she truly admires are the French Virginie Hucher and the artist with whom I share my island of Mallorca, Elena Gual. Her ability to combine simplicity with emotional impact has been a guiding light in her creative journey.

Technique

Each artwork she creates begins as a playful exploration of shapes, textures and colours. She combines traditional design principles with modern digital tools, using layering techniques to create depth and balance in her compositions.
Her connection to nature brings a fresh and lively dimension to his pieces, which integrate seamlessly into contemporary interiors.

A curiosity

Did you know that Merel started in the art world not so long ago? She started her journey into the art world in 2022, while studying Interior Design and planning to start a home staging business in Mallorca. During that time, she struggled to find affordable large-scale paintings for her projects, so she decided to try painting them herself. She now devotes all her time to this craft, which brings her more joy and satisfaction than she could ever have imagined.
