Monica Carvalho is a Swiss-Portuguese photographer and digital artist based in London, who has always been fascinated by illusionism and magic tricks. Inspired by the surrealists and the unlimited potential of photography, she has always loved experimenting with visual storytelling. Discovering Adobe Photoshop was a turning point that allowed her to combine her photos with imagination and, more recently, with generative AI. Monica's work is influenced by a combination of surrealist and contemporary artists. She has always been deeply inspired by the ingenious visual language of René Magritte and the dream worlds of Salvador Dalí. She also admires the poetic minimalism of Chema Madoz, whose black and white photographs transform everyday objects through conceptual twists. Another major influence on her work is the magical painting of Rob Gonsalves, where optical illusions give life to fascinating in-between worlds.

Technique

Monica creates surreal photomontages in which she mixes her own photographs to create unexpected visual combinations. Her process begins with the capture of body parts, objects and natural elements, which she then meticulously composes and merges in Photoshop. She pays special attention to color, lighting and composition, always seeking to surprise the viewer. Through her work, she invites us to question what we see and to rediscover the ordinary from a completely new perspective.
